Wildlife Conservation

Wildlife Conservation has been an important part of Big Cat & Nature Photography’s work almost right from the beginning when Barbara took up photography on a professional level back in 2008. She started to raise funds through contributions from the sales of photo products in July 2008 (initially for a leopard project in South Africa and from 2009 onwards, this expanded to other big cat species; primarily tigers and Amur leopards).
From 2011 onwards, Barbara has raised funds at zoos and wildlife parks directly for mainly two conservation groups, which are
- WildCats Conservation Alliance (primarily for tiger and Amur leopard projects in the Russian Far East)
- Wildlife Vets International (primarily for their Wild Tiger Health Centre, but also for their work in the Russian Far East and on the Island of Sumatra)

Due to the COVID restrictions Barbara did only very limited fundraising via her stall in 2020 and 2021. COVID has also resulted in financial losses for her business and through this for her personally. Based on this, she is currently not able to continue this fundraising approach. She has been able to give some of the remaining photoprint and fridge magnet stock to Wildlife Vets International and Colchester Zoo (WVI will offer them at events via their own stall, and Colchester Zoo has the photo products now out for sale in their gift shop; proceeds from sales in the gift shop will go Action For The Wild).
For the time being, there are still mounted photoprints, which you can buy from our web page (proceeds will go to either the WildCats Conservation Alliance or the Rutland Wildlife Sanctuary).
Barbara hopes that she will be able to take the fundraising stall back out at some stage in the future. In the meantime, she still raises funds for Wildlife Vets International, WildCats Conservation Alliance and also the Natureland Seal Sanctuary in Skegness via her collection box when she is providing talks on big cats or seals for example.
Through her connection with big cat conservation groups as well as zoos and wildlife parks and also through research for some publications, she gained a good understanding about the big cat and other wildlife species, their problems in their natural habitats as well as on the conservation efforts, which may help to prevent extinction of some of the species and solve general issues.
In context with raising awareness, Barbara has also produced publications in form of booklets and magazine as well as web page articles plus compiled short Wildlife Info - Films (the latter mainly on British wildlife). Conservation related articles on this web page include for example topics like Deforestation, Palm Oil and Visiting Wildlife Habitat. In addition to articles on conservation issues, there is also some information about Big Cats and British Wildlife available on this website (simply click on the highlighted terms above).

Big cat and wildlife conservation remains a very important part of Big Cat & Nature Photography’s work, and this reflects also in our approach to wildlife photography when being out in the field and teaching photography. This means participants on our Photography Experiences do not only benefit from learning about technical photography aspects, which help to get better quality images, but also from learning about the wildlife species, they photograph and how this may help them to get great images of the animals.

We do hope to see you on one of our Photography Experiences or at one of our Talks.
