Photography Workshops

We offer a wide range of photography experiences for groups of up to a maximum of 4 participants at a variety of venues. In view of photography workshops, our customers can choose between photographing big cats and other wildlife species at the Colchester Zoological Society or British wildlife, primarily deer and seals in their natural habitat.

All our photography workshops are open to all experience levels. Through our approach to work only with small groups of participants and not only providing one-to-one advice throughout the photography workshop, but also offering individual online photography sessions prior to the workshop day, all our customers will be able to get great photos on the day and learn about the photography aspects, they would like to improve on. This could be anything from how to get off automatic and how to use the exposure and focus settings to get the desired images, to how to approach wildlife photography more effectively and/or how to capture animals in motion or in a way that tells a story.

Below is a brief description for all photography workshop types. You can access more information and book your space/s by clicking on the relevant photography workshop name

Colchester Zoological Society

As in previous years we offer our popular Big Cat Photography workshop at the Colchester Zoological Society. On this photography experience participants will have the chance to photograph Amur tigers and leopards as well as cheetahs and the zoo’s very special African male lion plus other animals along the way.

During the Big Cat Photography workshop, I will be on hand to provide one-to-one advice on any photographic aspects and to support our customers with setting up their cameras correctly, e.g. blurring out the backgrounds, taking photos through the fences or of the animals in motion and at various distance levels.

Based on my connection with various wildlife conservation groups, our customers will also benefit from learning more about the big cats and how knowing the animals’ habits and behaviour will help to get better images.

On this photography workshop participants will have the opportunity to photograph the African wildlife species at the zoo; from the smaller ones like meerkats and the fennec fox to the larger animals like elephants and giraffes. Colchester Zoological Society has a wide variety of African wildlife, which include ungulate species, carnivores, primates, birds and as mentioned some smaller mammal species. We will tailor this photography workshop around where we anticipate photo opportunities and around what species participants would like to see.

As on all our photography experiences, I will be on hand to provide one-to-one advice on any photographic aspects and to support our customers with setting up their cameras correctly, for example to make an individual animal stand out or to capture a group of animals with all being in focus.

This photography workshop is ideal for people, who plan to go on safari in Africa or on any other wildlife holiday aboard as I will share some of my experience from having been out on safari in South Africa a few times and having looked at a number of different conservation projects there as well.

Norfolk

In addition, to the above-mentioned photography workshops at Colchester Zoological Society, we offer photography workshops with British wildlife. This enables our customers to capture seasonal events in natural habitat areas at the moment primarily along the coast in East Anglia.

We have offered our Seal Photography workshop in Norfolk for a few years now. At this photography experience we will have only a maximum number of 3 participants. This limitation is to ensure everyone can get good positions around the seals without causing any stress to the animals. This has also the advantage that I will have the time to provide every participants with support while keeping an eye on potential photo opportunities and the safety of all (participants and seals) .

We are quite lucky here in Britain as approximately 35% of the world grey seal population lives around the British Isles. The seals live out at sea during most of the year, but between November and January they are coming on to the beaches in Norfolk to give birth to their pups
(grey seals are born in a non-waterproof fur coat and will have to spend the first 6 weeks of their lives on land; until they have grown their first adult fur coat).

Our Seal Photography in Norfolk workshops have proven to be quite popular, and of course we will continue these. We will offer a set of photography workshops
(one for adults and one for teenagers) each in December and in January while the grey seals are pupping (having their young ones).

In Norfolk, our customers can capture the young seal pups and their interaction with their mums plus any other activity of the adult seals, including along the water edge, from the public viewing areas and designated paths through the dunes
(please bring a long lens). There will be a safety briefing before we start our journey through the dunes as the safety of the participants and the seals will always be top priority (we need to keep our distance to avoid disturbing seals resting; they will need the energy to hunt successfully for their food once they will get into the sea).

Through the option to have a online photography session prior to the photography workshop plus having access to one-to-one support on the workshop day, we are able to accommodate customers with any experience level.

The price for the Seal Photography workshop is £112.50 per participant. The start of this photography workshop will be at 8:30am (finishing at 1:30pm).

For 2025 we have scheduled the following dates for the Seal Photography in Norfolk workshop:
12 December 2025 (Friday) / pupping season - spaces available
further dates will be added if required

For more details on the Seal Photography in Norfolk workshop and to book a space on one of the above-mentioned dates please click on the highlighted workshop name above.

For a few years, we have offered also photography workshops for teenagers and for even younger children. And we will continue these. More details on the Children's Photography Workshops plus links to the individual workshop pages can be accessed by clicking on the highlighted term above.
