Children's Photography Workshops

Amur Leopard - Crispin
Colchester Zoological Society
Big Cat & Nature Photography has offered photography workshops for children for some years now and we will continue to offer photography workshops for children at Colchester Zoo and for teenagers in natural habitat areas, in Norfolk and at Bradgate Park in 2025.
At the Colchester Zoological Society, there are two separate photography workshops for younger children (aged 6-11 years) and teenagers (aged 12-15 years). Furthermore, there is our Seal Photography workshop for Teenagers (aged 12-16 years) in Norfolk during the grey seal pupping season plus new the Deer Rut Photography workshop for Teenagers (aged 12-16 years) at Bradgate Park in Leicestershire.
All four children photography workshops provide one-to-one support for participants (for the children and their guardians) throughout the event plus the option to have an individual online photography session prior to the photography workshop.
The maximum number of child participants is limited on the Wildlife Photography for Teenagers and the Deer Rut Photography for Teenagersworkshops to a maximum of 3 teenagers, while the maximum of child participants on the Zoo Photography for Junior Explorers workshops at Colchester Zoo and the Seal Photography for Teenagers workshop in Norfolk are limited to a maximum of 2 children (plus one guardian each).
The Zoo Photography for Junior Explorers workshop (for our youngest customers, aged 6-11 years) is about learning how to approach photographing animals by moving towards them without being noticed, by observing the animals and assessing possible photo opportunities plus by looking from what angle a better detail level of the animals and composition of the images can be achieved.
The duration of this photography workshop is 3-hours and we will usually stay in an area with some of the most popular animals like for example the sealions and penguins or the wolves and tigers to enable the children to learn more about photography and the animals as subjects for their photos (rather than walking long distances between different ends of the zoo).
The price will be £110.00 per child. As this is a special photography experience with a very low number of participants, we have so far scheduled only two Zoo Photography for Junior Explorers workshop at the Colchestr Zoological Society in 2025 (further dates will be added, if and when we will receive a higher number of booking enquiries):
27 September 2025 (Saturday) - fully booked
..4 October 2025 (Saturday) - fully booked
For more details on the Zoo Photography for Junior Explorers workshop and to book spaces for your child and yourself (or another guardian) on one of the above-mentioned dates please click on the highlighted workshop name above.
The format of our Wildlife Photography for Teenagers workshop (for children aged 12 to 15 years) will remain the same as it has been for the past years. This photography workshop offers the children of this age group the possibility to learn more about technical photography aspects as well as about how to approach wildlife photography and what it means to be a professional wildlife photographer. Children, who have taken up GCSE- or A-level photography will have the opportunity to explore wildlife photography and may be able to integrate images, they will take on the day (while having one-to-one support available) into their project work.
The Wildlife Photography for Teenagers workshop starts at 9:30am and finishes at 2:30pm and costs £167.50 per child participant. The following dates have been scheduled for the Wildlife Photography for Teenagers workshop at the Colchester Zoological Society in 2025:
18 October 2025 (Saturday) - spaces available
22 November 2025 (Saturday) - spaces available
(As in previous years, we will add further dates, if required)

On the Seal Photography for Teenagers workshop in Norfolk, our younger customers (aged 12-16 years) will have the opportunity to learn taking photos of wildlife (mainly seals) in its natural habitat. The children will be able to learn how to safely approach taking photos of wild animals and how to get good images by observing and capturing the action of seals and applying the best camera settings when taking photos of individual or groups of seals or even of landscapes.
The Seal Photography for Teenagers workshop starts at 8:30am and finish at 1:00pm (4.5 hours), and the price for one child and one guardian is £143.50. As we will be in natural habitat areas and we will need to be very careful, where we will go, we limit the number of participants on this photography workshop to only 2 children plus one guardian each.
For 2025 we have scheduled the following days for our Seal Photography for Teenagers workshop in Norfolk:
13 December 2025 (Saturday) / pupping season - only 1 space left
further dates will be announced if required

Deer Rut Photography for Teenagers st Bradgate Park

Red Deer Stag

Red Deer Stag
New in 2025 is our Deer Rut Photography for Teenagers (aged 12-16 years) workshop in Leicestrshire. As on our other two teenagers photography workshops, the children (and their guardians) will have the opportunity to take photos of wildlife and get to know their camera plus how the different features of this influence the image quality while taking photos of deer (and other wildlife like birds) in a natural habitat. The children will be able to learn how to safely approach taking photos of wild animals and how to get good images by observing and capturing the action of deer. And there will be support on setting up the cameras for different situations like when taking photos of individual or groups of deer or when working in differnt light conditions.
The Deer Rut Photography for Teenagers workshop starts at 7:30am and finish at 2:00pm (6.5 hours), and the price for one child and one guardian os £174.50. The longer duration is providing us with the chance to track deer and stop for longer periods to observe and photograph their actions (The approach is slightly different compared to the seal photography workshop as the deer is not necessarily all around us and we may have to change positions across slightly longer distances based on the deer activity).
The maximum number of participants on the Deer Rut Photography for Teenagers workshop is limited to 3 teenagers plus one guardian each. A smaller group enables us to be less intrusive and through this will result into us getting into better positions and for me to provide as much as needed support to all participants on a one-to-one basis.
As this is a new photography workshop, wwe have so far schediled only one Deer Rut Photography for Teenagers workshop at Bradgate Park in 2025:
11 October 2025 (Saturday) - spaces available
further dates will be announced if required
