Photography Workshops

We have started half-day photography workshops with our Big Cat Photography workshop at Colchester Zoo some years ago. In the meantime, we offer 4 different photography workshops and these offer a wider variety of subjects.

Big Cat Photography

Two of our photography workshops are still solely available at Colchester Zoo. One of these is of course the Big Cat Photography workshop. On this popular photography experience participants will have the chance to photograph Amur tigers and leopards as well as lions and other animals along the way. Our professional photographer will be on hand to provide one-to-one advice on any photographic aspects and to support our customers with setting the cameras up correctly, e.g. to blur out background, take photos through the fence and more.

We have schedule two dates for 2018 so far:
23 March 2018 (Friday) / Big Cat Photography workshop at Colchester Zoo - availability > 3 spaces
28 September 2018 (Friday) / Big Cat Photography workshop at Colchester Zoo - availability > 3 spaces

Our second photography workshop at Colchester Zoo is the Zoo Photography for Children workshop. This is as well a half-day photography experience, aimed at children at the age of 10 to 14 years. We will tailor the workshop around our junior clients and hence the range of animal enclosures, we will visit, may vary.

The children
(and their guardians) will have support with capturing the animal action throughout the event. This may be provided on an individual basis or for the entire group.

We have schedule two dates for 2018:
24 March 2018 (Saturday) / Zoo Photography for Children workshop at Colchester Zoo - availability > 3 spaces
29 September 2018 (Saturday) / Zoo Photography for Children workshop at Colchester Zoo - availability > 3 spaces

In addition, to the two above-mentioned workshops at Colchester Zoo we offer two photography workshops, which enable our customer to capture seasonal events in natural habitat areas.

One of these photography experiences will focus on the Deer Rut. As the day can be quite long and people may prefer a shorter event, we decided to provide the Deer Rut Photography workshop as a half-day photography experience with the option for participants to combine a morning and an afternoon workshop (at a discounted price when booking together) to capture the rut from sunrise to dusk.

As on all of our photography workshops participants will have access to help with setting up their cameras to get good images and advice on any photographic aspects and how to approach wildlife photography in natural habitat areas.

Our venues for the Deer Rut Photography workshop are Bradgate Park, home to herds of 100 red deer and 300 fallow deer, and the Peak District. The dates for the Deer Rut photography workshops here in 2018 are:
11 October 2018 (Thursday) / Deer Rut Photography workshop at Bradgate Park - availability > 3 spaces
12 October 2018 (Friday) / Deer Rut Photography workshop at Bradgate Park - availability > 3 spaces
18 October 2018 (Thursday) / Deer Rut Photography workshop at Bradgate Park - availability > 3 spaces
19 October 2018 (Friday) / Deer Rut Photography workshop at Bradgate Park - availability > 3 spaces
25 October 2018 (Thursday) / Deer Rut Photography workshop in the Peak District - availability > 3 spaces
26 October 2018 (Friday) / Deer Rut Photography workshop in Peak District - availability > 3 spaces

Last but not least we offer our new Seal Photography workshop at Donna Nook in Lincolnshire. We are quite lucky here in Britain as 40% of the seal population livesaround the British Isles. The seals live out at sea during most of the year, but in November and December they are coming on to some selected beaches to give birth to their pups. Donna Nook is one of these places and it is well managed to ensure the safety of the seal pups.

Although we will stay in public access areas our Seal Photography workshop participants will get quite close to the seals and will have the chance to take some great images of the pups, their interactions with their mums and the adult seals just relaxing on the beach or enjoying sliding through the mud.

Your professional photographer guide will provide help and advice on any photographic aspects and will tell you more about the seals on the event. As with our Deer Rut Photography workshop, customers have the option to book the Seal Photography workshop as a half-day event
(morning or afternoon) or alternatively as a full day event (at a discounted price when booking together); capturing the action from sunrise to sunset.

The dates for the Seal Photography workshop in 2018 are:
8 November 2018 (Thursday) / Seal Photography workshop at Donna Nook - availability > 3 spaces
9 November 2018 (Friday) / Seal Photography workshop at Donna Nook - availability > 3 spaces
22 November 2018 (Thursday) / Seal Photography workshop at Donna Nook - availability > 3 spaces
23 November 2018 (Friday) / Seal Photography workshop at Donna Nook - availability > 3 spaces

In order to ensure that all participants get the full benefit out of the photography workshops and to avoid a negative impact on the wildlife and its habitat, or respectively on other zoo visitors, we limit the number of participants on photography workshops to a maximum of 6 photographers / 4 on the Zoo Photography for Children workshop
(minimum of 4 participants / 3 on the Zoo Photography for Children workshop).
